Future mmWave networks set to deliver the best features of High and Low Frequencies

23 April 2019 -- seltime-editor

Future high-speed communication networks based on millimeter-wave (30-300GHz) technology will be more robust and efficient in delivering extremely high speed, high quality video, and multimedia content and services thanks to the results of a ground-breaking research project.   The recently-concluded project was a collaboration between Huawei Technologies and IMDEA Networks Institute, the Madrid-based research body pioneering many technologies that are being deployed in the new 5G landscape.

New project promises more robust and agile mobile networks

08 April 2019 -- seltime-editor

A 4-year research project called TAPIR-CM, launched in January this year, will result in the development of network architectures that are simultaneously more agile and more robust. Users will benefit from enhanced service reliability as well as reductions in service failure incidents and a more robust response to any failures that do occur.

ETSI ISG MEC visits 5TONIC Laboratory

04 April 2019 -- seltime-editor

Representatives of ETSI’s International Steering Group (ISG) on Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) were given an exclusive tour of the 5TONIC 5G co-creation laboratory in Madrid last week. The team from ETSI was in Madrid for the 17th plenary meeting of the MEC ISG.  The meeting was hosted by Universidad Carlos III Madrid who, as one of the partners of the 5TONIC initiative, arranged the laboratory visit.

Project delivers low-cost future network architecture for mobile operators

29 March 2019 -- seltime-editor

Lower operating costs, enhanced performance, flexibility, resilience and interoperability in 5G networks are all available to mobile operators following the recent completion of a major research project. The 4-year TIGRE5-CM project, coordinated by IMDEA Networks Institute in Madrid, delivers an architecture designed for future mobile networks, based on the SDN (Software Defined Networking) paradigm.  TIGRE5-CM simplifies deployment, configuration and management in both the access and core networks, integrating cutting-edge technologies.

A study analyzes pre-installed software on Android devices and its privacy risks for users

19 March 2019 -- seltime-editor

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) and the IMDEA Networks Institute, in collaboration with the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at  Berkeley (USA) and Stony Brook University of New York (USA), have carried out a study that encompasses 82,000 pre-installed apps in more than 1,700 devices manufactured by 214 brands, revealing the existence of a complex ecosystem of manufacturers, mobile operators, app developers and providers, with a wide network of relationships between them. This includes specialized organizations in user monitoring and tracking and in providing Internet advertising.  Many of the pre-installed apps facilitate access to privileged data and resources, without the average user being aware of their presence or being able to uninstall them.

“The work environment at IMDEA Networks was the key to my success”

11 March 2019 -- seltime-editor

We interview one of the members of our Alumni Network, Dr. Roderick Fanou, during his recent visit to IMDEA Networks. Roderick obtained his PhD from IMDEA Networks and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid back in December 2017 and is now a Post Doc at the San Diego SuperComputer Center, CAIDA, University of California San Diego, (USA).
