Aunamos un gran número de científicos que investigan en campos muy relacionados con las redes de ordenadores, con un alcance único en Europa. En el Instituto, y conjuntamente con el equipo de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), los investigadores se entienden, impulsan intereses comunes y, por tanto, son capaces de colaborar en profundidad en desafíos técnicos de vanguardia.

Nuestros puestos de estudiante de doctorado* ofrecen un empleo remunerado durante hasta cinco años en nuestro equipo de investigación a doctorandos con talento y aspiraciones profesionales. El valor total combinado de la dotación económica es de más de 135,000 euros durante un mínimo de cuatro años, incluidos los costes de seguridad social de la organización, la cobertura por la sanidad pública, prestaciones por desempleo, etc.

Los candidatos a los que se oferte un puesto como estudiante de doctorado de IMDEA Networks habrán sido preseleccionados y aceptados condicionalmente dentro del programa de Doctorado de la UC3M** o de cualquier otra universidad madrileña de alto nivel. No obstante, nuestros estudiantes de doctorado también pueden inscribirse en cualquier otra universidad internacional de prestigio.

*Hacemos notar que IMDEA Networks no otorga titulaciones y que, en la mayoría de los casos, como candidato de doctorado de la UC3M se requerirá; que completes al menos un año de cursos de master, incluso si posees ya una titulacón de master. Los licenciados universitarios interesados en solicitar una de estas vacantes deberán cumplir los siguientes requisitos

  • Estar en posesión de una Licenciatura, Máster o equivalente en Ciencias de la Computación, Ingeniería Eléctrica, Ingeniería Informática, Ingeniería de Telecomunicaciones, Ingeniería Telemática o un campo afín (concluido/s para cuando te unas a nosotros).
  • Excelente expediente académico.
  • Propuesta clara y definida del propósito de su tesis de Doctorado (Statement of Purpose).
  • Excelente nivel de inglés hablado y escrito. (Nota: no se requiere el español).
  • Estar altamente motivado.

* Niveles de admisión de la UC3M

Financiamos los estudios de doctorado de nuestros estudiantes de doctorado durante entre 4 y 5 años:

  • Recibirás hasta 4 años de financiación si eres admitido directamente al 1er año del programa de doctorado de la UC3M,
  • hasta 4 años y medio si también emprendes el programa completo de máster de la UC3M,
  • y puede que obtengas una extensión adicional de hasta 6 meses.

Trayectoria profesional

Tras obtener su doctorado, se espera que nuestros graduados encuentren empleo en organismos de investigación (incluyendo el ambito académico) ;y en;empresas, por ejemplo, entre los anteriores miembros del equipo. Ayudamos a nuestros estudiantes de doctorado en su busqueda de empleo tras la graduación.

PhD Position [NETCOM Lab] – Supervisor: Dr. Arturo AZCORRA

We are inviting applications for a PhD student position to work under the supervision of Dr. Arturo Azcorra as part of the NETCOM Lab.

Mandatory skills

  • Experience with advanced programing in Java
  • Experience with development of scripts and programs in Python
  • Knowledge and Experience with Linux systems

Optional, but desirable skills

PhD Position in Mobile Network Communications [NETCOM Lab] – Supervisor: Dr. Albert BANCHS

The NETCOM Lab led invites applications for a PhD Student position in Mobile Network Communications. The student will work on advanced mobile network technologies, participating on EU projects and industry collaborations, involving the following topics and tasks:

  • Design and implementation of mobile network algorithms and protocols
  • Resource allocation models and algorithms
  • Network slicing, virtualization and orchestration technologies
  • 5G and Beyond 5G mobile network architectures
  • Performance analysis and experimental evaluation of wireless systems

PhD Position in millimeter wave device localization and location-based network optimization [Ubiquitous Wireless Networking Group] – Supervisor: Dr. Paolo CASARI

The Ubiquitous Wireless Networking Group invites applications for a PhD Student position in the areas of millimeter-wave (mmWave) localization, context information inference, and network optimization. The student will develop algorithms for high accuracy wireless location estimation and environment mapping by exploiting the orders-of-magnitude higher location accuracy that can be achieved thanks to mmWave communications. These algorithms will have to be designed with zero initial information, i.e., assuming that neither base station positions nor the floor plan are known.

The design of the location mechanisms will be adapted to the hardware capabilities, including both low-complexity algorithms that can operate on inexpensive/constrained hardware (e.g., sensor devices for industrial applications) and algorithms designed for high-end systems such as base stations. In either case, special attention will be given to low-overhead schemes that leverage the information gathered as part of the normal operation of the communication devices, such as angle difference of arrival (ADoA) information derived from the output of the beam training and tracking operations. The system will be extended towards simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) by detecting multipath components reflected off walls and obstacles.

PhD in Integration of VLC Access and mm-wave Backhauling funded by H2020 Marie Curie Training Network [Ubiquitous Wireless Networking Group] - Supervisor Dr. Paolo CASARI

The Ubiquitous Wireless Networking Group led by Dr. Paolo Casari invites applications for a PhD Student position that will be funded by the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network ENLIGHT’EM (www.enlightem.eu) within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission. This project targets the design of LED bulbs that use VLC to communicate to users, and instead leverage mm-wave radios to establish a connection to the backend. Millimeter waves constitute an attractive solution for backhauling, as the antenna spacing is very small at mm-wave frequencies. Moreover, it is envisioned that millimeter wave chipsets could be integrated in the future in light bulbs, making it possible to jointly optimize the operations of both networks.

PhD in Integration between home automation and Visible Light Communication funded by H2020 Marie Curie Training Network [Pervasive Wireless System Group] - Supervisor Dr. Domenico GIUSTINIANO

The Pervasive Wireless Systems Research Group led by Dr. Domenico Giustiniano invites applications for a PhD Student position that will be funded by the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network ENLIGHT’EM (www.enlightem.eu) within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission. This project targets the integration of VLC with light-controlling automation components, integrating VLC with RF backscatter technology. While VLC downlink can exploit the low-energy footprint of light bulbs for communication, RF backscatter can instead operate efficiently in uplink without using batteries. The PhD student will design a new harvesting and communication paradigm that enables high-performance bi-directional, scalable and pervasive deployments of battery-free devices, with communication devices and network protocols that jointly use light and radio.

PhD Position in Content Caching and Machine Learning [NetEcon Group] – Supervisor: Dr. Sergey GORINSKY

The Network Economics (NetEcon) Group led by Dr. Sergey Gorinsky solicits applications for a PhD Student position at the intersection of content caching and machine learning. The student will contribute to the project that enables Internet content delivery with ultra-low latency via a large hierarchical system of distributed cache servers. The research will involve development and application of machine-learning techniques such as reinforcement learning. The student will work on feature design, model training, trace-driven evaluation against state-of-the-art heuristics, and implementation of algorithms for placement and management of cache servers.

An ideal applicant has the following profile

  • Master's degree in computer science or a related field
  • Excellent academic transcripts
  • Strong command of verbal and written English
  • Solid background in mathematics, algorithm design, machine learning, and hands-on programming

PhD Position on the Economics of Personal Data – Supervisor: Dr. Nikolaos LAOUTARIS

Most of the web that we know operates under a “free-service in exchange for collecting your personal data” business model. The aim of this PhD position is to study, develop, and demonstrate alternative “human-centric” economics models in which end users may negotiate, retract, and receive (micro)payments for granting access to their personal data. The work will include both theoretical questions, such as: “How to define the value of personal data?”, “How to split it in a multilateral value chain?”, as well as practical ones, such as: “How to implement such an economy over existing web technologies and frameworks?”, “How to validate its properties using real data in a realistic setting?”.

Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Strong background in algorithms, big data, machine learning, and information theory.
  • Some background on economics.
  • Strong programming and data analysis skills using recent technologies and frameworks.
