Prediction-based Optimization in Mobile Networks

Nicola Bui, PhD Student (Research Engineer), IMDEA Networks Institute and University Carlos III of Madrid
22 April 2015 - 1:00pm

Room 1.1/2 IMDEA Networks Institute, Avda. del Mar Mediterráneo 22, 28918 Leganés – Madrid

A highly interesting trend in mobile network optimization is to exploit knowledge of future network capacity to allow mobile terminals to prefetch data when signal quality is high and to refrain from communication when signal quality is low. While this approach offers remarkable benefits, it relies on the availability of a reliable forecast of system conditions.

This talk moves from the analysis of prediction techniques for mobile networks to proposing different optimization schemes for resource allocation and admission control. In particular, the talk will discuss a model for throughput prediction in mobile networks and its use in a single user resource allocation mechanism under imperfect prediction. Then, the problem will be extended to multi-user, multi-quality scenarios and the talk will address both optimal solutions and heuristic approaches for resource allocation and admission control.

About Nicola Bui

Nicola Bui has been the CEO of Patavina Technologies, spin-off of the university of Padova and operating in the ICT field designing and developing embedded systems. At the same time, he has been researcher fellow with Consorzio Ferrara Ricerche (CFR) and with the Department of Information Engineering (DEI) at the University of Padova for seven years. During this period he has been involved in many European and Italian funded projects, such as e-SENSE and SENSEI, on wireless sensor networks, IoT-A, aimed at defining a reference architectural model for the Internet of Things, SWAP, dealing with energy harvesting in the IoT and WISEWAI on the realization of a urban wireless sensor network in Padova. Nicola just joined IMDEA Networks as a Research Engineer.
