Visible light is ubiquitous in the cyber-space nowadays. In this talk, I will introduce our recent work about how to harness visible light for mobile computing applications in both temporal and spatial design domains. Our work leverages the fact that the fluorescent light intensity changes with a stable period, which can serve as both a global time reference and an indoor environment indicator. In the temporal domain, our design focuses on achieving a consistent time among different mobile devices without communications. In the spatial domain, mobile devices can acquire the knowledge of the ambient indoor/outdoor environment utilizing the periodical light intensity pattern, which is useful for WiFi-AP searching, GPS on/off switching, etc. Finally, I will demonstrate a duty-cycled control can largely improve the device lifetime without a significant performance compromise.
About Zhenjiang Li
Zhenjiang Li is a research fellow at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong in 2012. His research interests include distributed networking systems, mobile computing, and wireless networks. His research works have been published in premier journals and conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (TMC), IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS), ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks (TOSN), ACM MobiCom 2012, ACM SenSys 2012, ACM MobiHoc 2014, IEEE INFOCOM 2010-2013, IEEE ICDCS 2014, and so on. He also serves as a technical program committee member of IEEE ICPADS 2014, Mobiquitous 2012, 2013, etc. He has been awarded the solo best demo award at ACM MobiCom 2012 and the best paper candidate at IEEE MASS 2011.
