Brief Resume

Iljitsch van Beijnum holds a BICT (Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology) degree from De Haagse Hogeschool (The HagueUniversity) (The Hague, The Netherlands). He is currently working as a Research Assistant at IMDEA Networks and is also working toward a Ph.D. in Telematics Engineering at the Telematics Engineering Department of the University Carlos III of Madrid (Madrid, Spain). His Ph.D. is focused on multipath TCP and multipath routing: mechanisms that allow regular internet communications to flow simultaneously through multiple network paths. He is also the author and tutor of the "BGP for ISPs" course, organized in association with the NL-ix, which he teaches in The Netherlands.

Before joining IMDEA Networks, he worked as a Network Manager for BART Internet Services. He has also worked as a Senior Network Engineer and Consultant. In the late 1990s, Iljitsch van Beijnum worked in the Internet Service Provider business in The Netherlands. In 2000, he became a Freelance Writer and Networking Consultant, dealing with routing, IPv6 and the debugging of network problems or performance, amongst other issues. He wrote a highly successful book about the BGP routing protocol (Building Reliable Networks with the Border Gateway Protocol, O'Reilly, 2002) and another about IPv6 (Running IPv6, Apress, 2005). He has co-authored numerous papers on IPv6 and related topics.

In 2006, he was a member of the INFOCOM 2006 Technical Program Committee. He is currently a member of the Technical Program Committee for ReArch'08: Re-Architecting the Internet (Madrid, Spain), which is co-located with ACM CoNEXT 2008.

Since February 2008, he has been writing regularly for Ars Technica, mainly about the Mac for Infinite Loop. A list of his recent articles is available at his author page.

Since 2001, he has been active within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), especially within the Multihoming in IPv6 (multi6) working group, which has now been replaced by the shim6 working group.

Personal Interests

Iljitsch van Beijnum has a great appreciation for both cutting edge and retro technology, such as art deco sky scrapers. When his iPod is out of podcasts (or, more likely, out of battery power), he contemplates writing science fiction one day.
